Students from FK-KMK UGM Participate in IISMA Program at Osaka University to Deepen Their Knowledge of Biotechnology in Medicine

Students of the Medical Study Program, FK-KMK UGM have the opportunity to study at Osaka University, Japan, through the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program. The student is Sheila Tirta Ayumurti, and the program runs from September 25, 2024, to February 9, 2025, at the Faculty of Biotechnology (ICBiotech), which focuses on the development of biotechnology science and technology.

IISMA is a program designed to provide Indonesian students with academic and cultural experiences at overseas educational institutions. As one of the scholarship recipients, Sheila has the opportunity to study directly under the guidance of Professor Fujiyama Kazuhito to deepen her understanding and develop her expertise in the application of biotechnology in the field of health.

During her studies at Osaka University, Sheila will explore various disciplines that support the strengthening of basic medical science. Through the integration of biotechnology at ICBiotech, she aims to explore innovations in medical research and accelerate breakthroughs in biotechnology-based therapies and treatments. This step is in line with efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 4: Quality Education.

This Student Participation in the IISMA program also provides Sheila with the opportunity to expand her international network with students and researchers from various countries. These interactions are expected to open up cross-cultural and scientific collaborations that can support innovation in the global health sector. In addition, this program strengthens academic relations between Indonesia and Japan, supporting SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through international cooperation in education and research.

IISMA is an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia that aims to increase the competitiveness of Indonesian students in the global arena. By providing access to quality education at the world’s leading universities, this program prepares students to become future leaders who can contribute to the development of science and technology.

Sheila’s success in obtaining this opportunity proves that Indonesian students have the competence to compete at the international level. It is hoped that the experience gained during her studies at Osaka University will benefit the development of medical science and health in Indonesia, as well as inspire other students to continue pursuing academic opportunities internationally.
