The Role of Pharmacogenomics in Precision Medicine

FK-KMK UGM. Pharmacogenomics is the study of the role of the genome in drug response. The field of pharmacogenomics investigates how a person’s genetic information affects their reaction to drugs. Pharmacogenomics became one of the topics raised in Summer Course 2023, specifically in Panel 1 which was held on Monday (6/11) at the Auditorium of the Faculty.

Dr. Ruzilawati Abu Bakar from Universiti Sains Malaysia gave a presentation entitled “Genetic Polymorphisms and Addiction”. In her presentation, Ruzilawati explained pharmacogenomics in general and genetic polymorphism. “Genetic polymorphism is the appearance of two or more genotypes or alleles that are not continuous simultaneously in a population. One of its functions is to detect DNA characters,” he explained.

Furthermore, Dr. Piroon Jenjaroenpun from Mahidol University, Thailand gave a presentation on technology in pharmacogenomics through his presentation entitled “The Role of Bioinformatics in the Implementation of Clinical Pharmacogenomics”. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field of science that develops software to make sense of biological data, especially when data sets are large and complex, including genomic data.

Assoc. Prof. Chonlaphat Sukasem, B.Pharm., Ph.D. from Ramatibodhi Hospital, Thailand shared Thailand’s experience in the implementation of pharmacogenomics in clinical therapy. The development of pharmacogenomics has an important role in precision medicine. Differences in drug response from each individual are the main things that need to be considered in its development.

Summer Course 2023 was held for 2 weeks from November 6, 2023 to November 17, 2023. The activity, which involves students from both within the country and abroad, aims to improve interprofessional in healthcare management and technology with its accompanying problems with an interdisciplinary and multi-university approach.
