Recognizing Zebrafish as Model Organisms for Disease

FK-KMK UGM. The Academic Internationalization Unit of the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK) UGM has held a Hybrid Guest Lecture and Kick Off Visiting Professor & Guest Lecture (VPGL) Grant 2023 Socialization on Thursday (2/2) in the 1st Floor Auditorium of the Tahir Foundation Building FK-KMK UGM.

Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, dr. Ahmad Hamim Sadewa, Ph.D was present to open the activity. He said that one of the goals of FK-KMK UGM is to produce high-quality research. “This high-quality research will be an effort to improve the quality of health in Indonesia,” he explained.

Prof. dr. Herman P. Spaink from Universiteit Leiden, Netherlands became the first speaker with the topic “Fish and Organoid Models for Studying Mycobacterial Diseases Such As Tuberculosis”. According to him, there are several criteria why zebrafish are suitable to be a model organism. “Zebrafish are easy to culture, their larvae are transparent making them ideal for imaging, many transgenics for fluorescence imaging, excellent genomic tools are available, many mutants, and most human genes are orthologous in zebrafish,” he added.

The second speaker is Prof. Maurice van Steensel from Nanyang Technology University, Singapore with the topic “Zebrafish Models for Human Skin Diseases”. Prof. Maurice said that zebrafish skin is very similar to human skin. “Research that has been done shows that zebrafish provide a useful model system for studying the molecular aspects of skin development,” he explained.

dr. Junaedy Yunus, M.Sc., Ph.D. from Gadjah Mada University presented the topic “Diseases-related Animal Model: Application in Metabolic Diseases, Ischemic-Reperfusion Injury, and Organ Fibriosis”. dr. Junaedy explained that the similarities in genetics, anatomy, and physiology of animals with humans make animals serve as model organisms. “How to choose the right model depends on the research variables,” he said.

The discussion regarding this organism model was led by dr. Gunadi, Ph.D., Sp.BA., Subsp.DA.(K), Academic Internationalization Unit FK-KMK UGM. (Nirvana/Reporter)
