FM-UGM. The nitrate level of pollution in water well caused colorectal cancer if the neutral level is rising. In Yogyakarta, nitrate pollution is rising over the last 20 years. In 2014, the prevalence of rectal cancer rate 6 of 100 patients in Dr. Sardjito Hospital.
Colorectal cancer is caused by biological process disturbances in intestinal epithelial cells due to changes in the function of the proto-oncogene and tumor suppressor genes. Based on Dr. Fathmawati, S.S.T., M. Kes researched, if the society consumed water with a concentration of nitrate exceeding 50 mg / L it would increase the risk of colorectal cancer, especially in the long run. In addition, men had the more risk of colorectal cancer if they consumed water for more than 10 years. In the age group, 50 years and over also have a risk of colorectal cancer.
The factors of colorectal cancer are socio-demographic factors covering age, gender, economic status and education; Genetic factors; Behavioral factors include smoking habits, overweight, red meat and processed meats, alcohol, stress; Environmental factors, high nitrate exposure in drinking water; and medical conditions, history of colitis, history of malignant tumors and diabetes. Moreover, the preventing factors are physical activity and diet.
This risk could be prevented by monitoring the quality of water well minimal once in a year in water well, which had a low nitrate pollution and once in three months in water well which had high nitrate pollution by the government through public health officials. Also, it could be prevented by providing a good sanitation and management domestic waste. Moreover, the information about the dangers of nitrate pollution in water well should be known by the society. Thus, they could be aware of their health.
This research refers to a dissertation entitled “Economic Valuation of the Effect of Nitrate Pollution in Well Water on Colorectal Cancer Incidence in Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta” by Fathmawati.
