Summer Course 2023: Getting Closer to Precision Medicine

 

FK-KMK UGM. Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing UGM in collaboration with Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy UGM once again organized Summer Course 2023 with the theme “Future of Healthcare: Leapfrogging Innovation through Precision Medicine” on Monday (6/11) at the Auditorium of the Faculty.

Coordinator of Summer Course 2023, Prof. dr. Gunadi, Ph.D., Sp.BA., Subps.DA(K) said that the Summer Course had experienced difficulties during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the Summer Course eventually continued to be held online.

Currently, the Indonesian Ministry of Health has begun to focus on the development of Precision Medicine. This is in line with the theme presented by the Summer Course. “To realize the increase in knowledge about the theme, FK-KMK is currently still committed to collaborating with the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy in the implementation of Summer Course 2023,” explained Prof. Gunadi.

Dean of FK-KMK UGM, Prof. dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, M.Sc., Ph.D., FRSPH warmly welcomed the participants. He said different backgrounds would provide more diverse experiences and knowledge during the Summer Course. “The speakers chosen as speakers are also diverse, hopefully, they will provide a variety of useful knowledge for participants,” he added.

Dr. Dra. Lucia Rizka Andalucia, Apt, M.Pharm, MARS (Director General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices of the Ministry of Health) was the first keynote speaker with the topic Transforming Indonesian Healthcare to Initiate Precision Medicine. Rizka said that currently there are 6 pillars of health transformation carried out by the Ministry of Health, namely primary services, referral services, health resilience systems, health financing systems, health human resources, and health technology. One of the efforts to realize health transformation is the development of Precision Medicine.

“The Ministry of Health gives full support to the development of Precision Medicine through inclusive and integrative implementation in policy, innovation, and clinical. Concrete evidence of the Ministry of Health’s support is manifested in the BGSi (Biomedical and Genome Science Initiative), the first national initiative to encourage using genomic data resulting from sequencing for precision medicine and effective care improvement,” said Rizka. In the future, the Ministry of Health’s support will also be realized by developing a biorepository, sequencing lab, and high-performance computing analysis.

The second key speaker was Prof. dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, M.Sc., Ph.D., FRSPH (Dean of FK-KMK UGM). Prof. Yodi delivered a presentation entitled “The Role of Higher Education Institutions in the Development of Personalized Healthcare”. The roles that universities can play include research and innovation, genomic sequencing and analysis, educational programs, interdisciplinary collaboration, clinical trials, and translational research, ethical and legal considerations, as well as community involvement, and collaboration with industry and government.

Summer Course 2023 aims to enhance interprofessional in healthcare management and technology with accompanying issues with an interdisciplinary and multi-university approach. This is in line with one of the goals of the SDGs, which is quality education.

Participants who attended the Summer Course 2023 came from various countries, both offline and online. Among them were students from VUMc, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Cyberjaya University, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Mahidol University, University of The Philippines, Universiti Malaya, University of Dental Medicine, and Gadjah Mada University.
