FK-KMK UGM. Advances in dermatology have significantly impacted the understanding and treatment of various skin health issues. dr. Arief Budiyanto, Ph.D., Sp.D.V.E., Subsp. O.B.K., a senior lecturer and researcher at the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, FK-KMK, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has played a pivotal role in these developments. With expertise in photodermatology, skin carcinogenesis, and dermatologic surgery, Dr. Arief has contributed groundbreaking research that not only enriches scientific literature but also influences clinical practices.
dr. Arief’s aspiration to become a doctor was evident from a young age. In the third grade of elementary school, he confidently declared his ambition before his classmates, inspired by his uncle, a practicing doctor. This early influence fueled his determination to pursue a career in medicine.
When it came time to choose his academic path, UGM’s Faculty of Medicine was his sole choice. His passion and focus led him to the fascinating field of dermatology. “Skin is not just about aesthetics; it’s a window to the body’s condition,” Dr. Arief explains. For him, understanding the skin and the pathogenesis of related diseases is key to helping patients maintain optimal skin health. “Good skin is healthy skin,” he emphasizes.
In 1997, dr. Arief was among the few general practitioners recruited as staff in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at UGM’s Faculty of Medicine. Encouraged by Prof. Dr. dr. Hardyanto Soebono, Sp.KK(K), he pursued a career in academia, completing a doctoral degree before specializing—a rare route in Indonesia at the time. His dedication to education and research earned him a Monbusho scholarship to continue his studies in Japan.
Throughout his academic journey, dr. Arief has held key positions, including Head of the Erythrosquamous Diseases, Autoimmune, and Photodermatology Section, and Chair of the Photodermatology Division at FK-KMK UGM. He has also held strategic roles in healthcare, serving as President Director of UGM Academic Hospital (2018–2021) and Deputy Chair of the National Evaluation Commission of the Indonesian College of Dermatology and Venereology (2022–2024). Active in professional organizations such as the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) and the Indonesian Society of Dermatology and Venereology (PERDOSKI), dr. Arief continues to lead and inspire.
As Chair of the Research and Publication Commission of the Indonesian College of Dermatology and Venereology (2022–2024), Dr. Arief has championed advancements in dermatological research and publication. He has authored 29 national and international publications. Among his notable studies is research on inhibiting telomerase activity in squamous cell carcinoma through EGF receptor suppression, which offers valuable insights into skin cancer therapy development.
For dr. Arief, research is not just an academic endeavor but a practical tool for societal benefit. “To make adjustments, we must first understand the foundation—whether it aligns or not—so we can address problems effectively,” he explains. This philosophy drives him to connect his research findings with practical applications that benefit patients.
dr. Arief Budiyanto’s journey and contributions exemplify how dedication, knowledge, and leadership can converge to create meaningful impacts in medicine. With a strong vision and unwavering commitment, he continues to make significant contributions to his profession and society at large. (Reporter: Fauziah Nurhasanah/Editor: Isroq Adi Subakti)
