UGM’s FK-KMK Supervisors Ensure Higher Quality Student Theses

FK-KMK UGM. Theses, dissertations, and other final projects are mandatory academic requirements for students at various levels of higher education to obtain their degrees. This is stipulated in the Rector’s Regulation of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) No. 23 of 2024, Article 44, Paragraph 3, stating, “Final projects may take the form of theses, dissertations, prototypes, projects, or other similar types of final assignments as determined in the written guidelines of the Study Program.”

To accommodate this requirement, the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK) UGM held a Supervisory Forum Workshop for faculty advisors within FK-KMK UGM.

“Lecturers are professional educators and scientists whose primary tasks are to transform, develop, and disseminate knowledge and technology through education, research, and community service. Therefore, serving as a student advisor is one of our shared responsibilities and duties,” explained Dr. Ahmad Hamim Sadewa, Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at FK-KMK UGM.

Dr. Dwi Aris Agung Nugrahaningsih, M.Sc, Ph.D., one of the workshop facilitators, acknowledged that there are several common issues encountered during proposal and final examinations. These include a lack of understanding of the proposal, the quality and depth of literature, research feasibility, and a lack of consistency between the proposal and the results.

“A significant difference between what is promised in the proposal and the final research results can raise concerns about the methodology or the execution of the research,” emphasized Dr. Agung.

Additionally, Dr. Yoyo Suhoyo, MMedEd, Ph.D., highlighted the need for supervisors to implement a student-centered learning approach in their mentoring, which positions students at the center of the learning process.

“Let us work together to strive for better medical and health professional education,” urged Dr. Yoyo in his closing remarks.

The workshop also provided an opportunity for faculty advisors to engage in group discussions on various issues and dynamics encountered during the supervision of final projects.

This workshop reflects FK-KMK UGM’s dedication to ensuring quality education aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 7), and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).
