Retired Professor of FK-KMK UGM Receives Honorary Doctorate Degree from Umeå University

A retired professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology from the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Prof. dr. M. Hakimi, Sp.OG(K), Ph.D, will receive an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine, Umeå University, Sweden. The honorary doctorate will be conferred during Umeå University’s annual ceremony in October 2025. The award is given to Prof. Hakimi for his contributions to maternal and child health, reproductive health, global health education, research ethics, and especially to the academic collaboration between UGM, the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health (EpiGH), and Umeå University over the past 30 years.

According to Umeå University’s official release, Prof. Hakimi has advanced the science of obstetric care, micronutrient deficiencies, non-communicable diseases, and the health consequences of domestic violence. He has also contributed to global research initiatives, such as WHO STEPS, INDEPTH Network, and Cochrane Collaboration. Her academic output includes more than 300 publications, as well as educational textbooks and books that inform public health policy and practice.

His research and collaboration with Umeå University have made a difference for Southeast Asia and us,” said Patrik Danielson, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University, in an official release on umu.se.

In addition to research and teaching, Prof. Hakimi also dedicates his time to advancing research ethics. His chairmanship of the Medical and Health Research Ethics Committee (KEPKK) of the Faculty of Medicine UGM and RSUP Dr. Sardjito has been instrumental in promoting research integrity, ethical governance, and good clinical practice-which has shaped and strengthened all aspects of the long-term collaboration between UGM and EpiGH.

Her contributions have not only strengthened the relationship between Sweden and Indonesia but also markedly improved health systems, policies, and practices in Southeast Asia,” Umeå University wrote in a release received by the Faculty of Medicine Gadjah Mada University.

Prof. Hakimi’s contributions to the world and the honorary doctorate he received are part of the Faculty’s efforts to encourage the achievement of the Parnertship of The Goals, especially poin 2: No Hunger, poin 3: Healthy and Prosperous Life, poin 4: Quality Education, poin 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, SDG 10: Reduced Inequality, and SDG 17: Partnerships to Achieve Goals.
