Regional Germany Alumni Expert Meeting 2022 at the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing UGM

FK-KMK UGM. Indonesia was appointed as a host for Regional Germany Alumni Expert Meeting in 2022. Located at the UGM Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, the event lasted for four days (11-14/12) with various agendas under the theme of “Environmental Footprint of Medical Care”.

The agenda series was opened by dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, M.Sc., Ph.D. FRSPH as Dean of FK-KMK UGM and DAAD alumni on Sunday (11/12) at The Phoenix Hotel, Yogyakarta. He warmly welcomed the arrival of 19 DAAD Alumni from various countries including: Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Philippines, Nepal, and Indonesia. Apart from DAAD Alumni, this agenda also involved students of International Health (IH), Public Health Postgraduate Program, FK-KMK UGM.

A virtual talk on “An introduction to climate-smart health systems” by Dr. med. Alina Herrmann from the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (HIGH) followed the agenda. The Director of Teaching HIGH, Prof. Olaf Horstick, then led the Q&A session on that day.

The second day meeting was held at the Tahir Building, 8th Floor, North Wing, FMPHN UGM and began with an introduction to FMPHN which delivered by dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, M.Sc., Ph.D, FRSPH continued by an introduction to HIGH by Prof. Olaf Horstick. The agenda was then followed by a presentation from dr. Lutfan Lazuardi, M. Kes. Ph.D. under the heading “Carbon Footprint of Telemedicine Solutions: Untapped Opportunity for Reducing Carbon Emissions in the Health Sector”.

At this event, each DAAD Alumni delivered a presentation on a topic related to the Environmental Footprint of Medical Care which was followed by a discussion.

Apart from presentations in class, DAAD Alumni and IH Students also made visits to some institutions, included Integrated Laboratory of FMPHN UGM, Diagnostic Laboratory of EDP UGM, Academic Hospital of UGM, and primary health care institutions (Puskemas Mlati II and Puskesmas Danurejan II).

During this visit, DAAD participants also observed how medical waste is treated in each agency.They also shared information about how medical waste was handled in their respective countries.

Before the Regional Germany Alumni Expert Meeting 2022’s agenda came to a close, a presentation on Universitas Gadjah Mada’s initiatives to achieve a green campus was made. The presentation, titled “Aiming Toward a Sustainable and Green Campus at UGM: Track Record and Best Practices of the UGM Green Campus Team,” was given by Ir. Sentagi Sesotya Utami, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D.

The Regional Germany Alumni Expert Meeting is an annual meeting that brings together DAAD Alumni from various countries. Sharing of perspectives and knowledge regarding current problems and potential implementable solutions is one of its key goals.
