Mental Health Challenge in Millennial Era |
|||
Overview:
Based on Basic Health Research data in 2018, the prevalence of major psychiatric disorder increased from 0.15% to 0.18% and the prevalence of mental emotional disorder among citizens of 15 years old and more increased from 6.1% to 9.8%. Approximately 12 millions Indonesians of age 15 years old and more suffered from depression. In 2016, there were 1800 cases of suicidal death. Globally, more than 800.000 people die each year due to suicide. This means for every 40 seconds, there is 1 person committing suicide. The advancement of digital technology and social media correlates positively with incidents of mental health issues, especially relating to gadget addiction. A research in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction stated that excessive use of social media could lead to depression. Research has shown that depression score (CES-D) was elevated 9.0% in social media users. Due to the serious impact mentioned above, comprehensive intervention that is promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative, is required. The 2022 Elective Program on “Mental Health Challenge in Millennial Era” provides an in-depth presentation on several topics including: (1) Mental disorders in millennial era – suicide, substance abuse, internet addictions, sleep disorders, anxiety, etc, (2) Medical intervention for mental health issues, (3) Non-medical intervention of mental health issues, and (4) Psychiatric cases from a legal outlook. |
