Precision Medicine and its Impact on Elderly Health

FK-KMK UGM. Aging became one of the topics raised in Summer Course 2023,  Tuesday (7/11) at the Auditorium of the Faculty. This topic became the focus of discussion because precision medicine has a relationship with aging, especially in terms of anti-aging and its effect on the health of the elderly.

Prof. Yen Hua Huang from Taipei Medical University, Taiwan was the first speaker with the topic “Cell-based Therapy: Mechanism, Safety and Biodistribution for Precision Clinical Applications”. Prof. Yen explained what cell therapy is and precision medicine for anti-aging.

Next, Dr. Noraida Omar from Universiti Putra Malaysia gave a presentation on nutrition management in the elderly. Through a presentation entitled “Nutrition in Older People”, she gave a detailed explanation of enteral nutrition. “Enteral nutrition is a therapy for providing nutrition through the gastrointestinal tract using a special tube (feeding tube). It can be administered through the nasogastric tube nasoduodenal tube or nasojejunal route,” he explained.

Dr. Abdel Hakim Saleem, DDS, Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki, Finland became the third speaker by giving a presentation entitled “Aging Related to Oral Health”. He explained that oral health influences the general health of the elderly.

Finally, Dr. Izyan Binti A. Wahab from Universiti Malaya, Malaysia presented the material “Polypharmacy in Older People” which tried to explain in detail the impact of polypharmacy. Polypharmacy in older people is associated with inappropriate drug prescribing and increased risk of side effects.

Summer Course 2023 was held for 2 weeks from November 6, 2023 to November 17, 2023. This activity, which involves students from both domestic and overseas, aims to improve interprofessional in healthcare management and technology with its accompanying problems with an interdisciplinary and multi-university approach.
