Infectious Diseases Need More Attention

FK-KMK UGM. Most low and middle-income countries (LMICs) including Indonesia still bear a significant proportion of the infectious diseases burden although infectious diseases have declined significantly since the last decades. Infectious diseases that are the cause of death in Indonesia are malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.

This fact is delivered by dr. Eggi Arguni, Sp.A.(K), Ph.D the general chairperson of GAMA-ICTM 2022 on Gadjah Mada International Conference on Tropical Medicine (GAMA-ICTM) 2022 that brought the topic “Global Challenges in Emerging Infectious Diseases” that was held on 15 – 17 November 2022 virtually. This event was held by Center for Tropical Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada on the momentum of National Health Day 12 November 2022.

“At this conference, we invite scientists, health professionals, students, and experts from multi disciplines to share the latest update about infectious diseases. From this conference, I hope the participants can share the updates related to research results also new approaches and technologies in controlling infectious diseases,” said dr. Eggi.

Minister of Health of the Republic Indonesia, Ir. Budi Gunadi Sadikin, CHFC, CLU explained that Indonesia still has a burden from infectious diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. This is why we should have a strong health innovation system to fight the spread of infectious diseases. Covid-19 teaches us that every country must have the capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to the emergence of various threats to public health events,” he said.

First day event discuss infectious diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. Those topics are delivered by lecturers from UGM, non-UGM, and guest lecturers from around the world. Second day event discussed One Health, Travel Medicine, and continued with debate guided by the Dean of FK-KMK UGM, dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, M.Sc., Ph.D., FRSPH. Basic discussion, research, and community and ethics related to dengue were the topics on the last day of activities. (Nirwana/Reporter)
