Improving Infectious Disease Patient Services

FK-KMK UGM. Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing UGM held Visiting Professor and Guest Lecture: Research-Based Educational Strategies for Improving the Quality of Patient Care on Tuesday (01/11) at the 1st floor Auditorium of Tahir Postgraduate Building of the Faculty.

Patient care including infectious diseases needs to continue to develop because, over time, cases of antibiotic resistance are increasing. This guest lecture is one of the efforts to realize good health and well-being through education. Good health and well-being is one of the SDG goals that Indonesia is currently realizing.

Prof. Jan Noewen, MD, Ph.D from Erasmus MC University was the guest speaker with the topic “Complex Infectious, Complex Solution: Old and New Modalities in the Treatment of Complex Infectious Disease”. Prof. Noewen explained that antimicrobial resistance is a global problem.

This condition occurs when microbes evolve so that they have new mechanisms that protect them from the effects of antimicrobials. Antibiotic resistance is one form of AMR, specifically the becoming resistant to antibiotics. Infections caused by resistant microbes are more difficult to treat.

There are several solutions that can be applied to overcome antimicrobial resistance. “The first is to provide treatment from the most basic things. Recognize what the disease is first and give appropriate treatment. So, don’t immediately give antibiotics,” explained Prof. Noewen.

Furthermore, health workers must be able to build good infectious disease services. If this has been done, researchers can also conduct research related to new, stronger antibiotics. (Nirwana./Reporter)
