Title/course offered:

Introduction to Nutrition Problems in Indonesia

Overview:

This elective course is specifically designated for International students to be exposed to various nutrition problems in Indonesia. Students will be doing field visits to primary health center, hospitals and other health facilities related to malnutrition problems. In addition, the students will be doing cultural excursions exposing to Indonesian and Yogyakarta-specific food culture as well as Javanese culture. In each week, it will be split between field visits and in-class lectures. The in-class lectures will be exposing the students to nutrition research that our faculty members have done. During the duration of the program, it is expected that each student will have a project of interest related to what they have seen or learned from the lectures. At the end this project will be presented in front of their peers in Indonesia.

Objective

General purpose:

Introducing incoming students to current nutrition problems in Indonesia and current approach to solve them.

Special purpose:

  • Introducing current nutrition problems in Indonesia
  • Nutrition program conducted in Indonesia, in clinical and community settings
  • Updated approach to solve nutrition problems in Indonesia
  • Current nutrition research issues in Indonesia
Periode:

Two to four weeks

Activities:

  1. Student induction. Student can choose one topic about nutrition problems in Indonesia and explore more about it during the course.
  2. Visiting health facilities and other places related to malnutrition reduction program (hospital, Puskesmas, Posyandu, local NGO etc).
  3. Attending lectures on nutrition problems in Indonesia, current approach to solve nutrition problems and current nutrition research issues in Indonesia.
  4. Reflective practices and discussion with supervisor related to the topics.
  5. Evaluation and review at the end of the programme by supervisor.
Lectures:

  1. Obesity and weight control program in Indonesia
  2. Risk factors and current approach to prevent stunting
  3. Anemia reduction program and its challenges
  4. Local functional foods development to support nutrition intervention for various health problems
  5. Current nutrition research issues in Indonesia

Practical sessions: 

None

Tutorial: 

Reflective practices and discussion with supervisor related to the topics.

Measurable learning outcome:

  1. The ability to describe about nutrition problems in Indonesia
  2. The ability to explain about nutrition program conducted in Indonesia, in clinical and community settings related to the topics.
  3. The ability to explain updated approach to solve nutrition problems and its related current research issue in Indonesia
