Get to Know the Concept of Social Health and How to Make It Happen

FK-KMK UGM. Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK) UGM received a visit from Prof. Dr. Myrra Vernooij-Dassen from Radboud University Medical Center Netherlands on 27 April – 4 May 2023. Prof. Myrra gave a presentation in a Guest Lecture with the topic “Social Interaction and Cognitive Performance: Theory and Evidence from Human and Rodent Studies” on Tuesday (2/5) in the 1st Floor Auditorium of the Tahir Foundation Building FK-KMK UGM.

According to Prof. Myrra, social health is a person’s ability to relate well to other people or to be able to interact with other people or groups without discriminating against race, ethnicity, religion or belief, social status, economy, politics.

Prof. Myrra explained that social health is like an umbrella that covers several domains, such as capacity, autonomy, social participation, social networks, social functions, and assessment. “The concept of social health as an umbrella for its domains is a concept that can explain social health profiles well,” he added.

In her presentation, Prof. Myrra also said that the conceptual framework for social health allows for structured identification of markers for the realization of social health. “Relationships between markers of neurobiological health and social health have been found, risk factors will later be modified and protective factors will be used to support interventions,” explained Prof. Myrra.

Apart from this guest lecture, Prof. Myrra will also go to several classes as a guest lecturer in the Doctoral Program and the Department of Neurology. On Thursday (4/5), Prof. Myrra will give a presentation in a guest lecture with the theme “Social Interaction and Health”.
