Efforts to Manage Cardiovascular Disease through NGS

FK-KMK UGM. Biomedical Sciences Study Program and Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing UGM held a Visiting Professor and Guest Lecture with the topic “BCL – Bench to Beside: Cardiovascular Learning” on Thursday (2/11) at the Auditorium on the 1st floor of the Faculty.

Prof. Roger Foo, MD, MBBS, FRCP, FACC from the National University of Singapore was the guest speaker at this event. He said that cardiovascular disease in Singapore is currently increasing. Patients who are stricken have an age of 10 years easier than cardiovascular patients in Western countries.

The heart is one of the non-healing organs. This means that if trauma or injury occurs to the organ, it cannot recover. This is different from the skin, which can recover if injured. “The only treatment for patients who have an unhealthy or even unusable heart condition is transplantation,” explains Prof. Roger.

Currently, cardiovascular disease treatment has developed using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). This is one of the revolutions in the world of human genomics. NGS can read 20,000-25,000 human genes in just a short time. This is called a revolution because it can contribute to the treatment of cardiovascular patients.

In the framework of his visit to FK-KMK UGM, Prof. Roger also held discussions with the Dean Team, namely Prof. Dr. dr. Hera Nirwati, M.Kes, Sp.MK (Vice Dean for Finance, Assets and Human Resources) and Dr. dr. Lina Choridah, Sp.Rad (K) (Vice Dean for Research and Development). (Nirwana/Reporter)
