Laboratory Aspects of Tuberculosis and HIV Infection

Overview:

Indonesia ranks third in the world in the number of tuberculosis cases after India and China with a total of 824,000 cases. Tuberculosis is also a common comorbid of HIV infections that need special laboratory approach. Due to the abundance variety of TB and HIV in Indonesia, this course will cover topics on tuberculosis and HIV infections.

Objective:

General Purpose:

  • To enrich student’s knowledge about the laboratory aspects of TB and HIV.
  • To enrich student’s experience in laboratory management of TB and HIV infections.

Specific Learning Objective:

  • To explain the laboratory aspects of TB and HIV infections.
  • To demonstrate the laboratory investigations of TB and HIV infections.
Period:

25 July 2022 – 05 August 2022 (two weeks)

Activities:

  • Student Induction
  • Attending morning report, case report, and presentation 
  • Attending lectures on TB and HIV infections 
  • Discussion with supervisor Dr. dr. Umi Solekhah Intansari, M.Kes., Sp.PK(K)
  • Involvement in laboratory investigation of TB (Complete Blood Count, IGRA, GeneXpert, TB Sputum Culture) and HIV (Complete Blood Count, CD4 counts and viral load– Flowcytometry)
  • Evaluation and review at the end of the programme by supervisor.
Lectures:

  • Pathogenesis of TB and HIV Infection – Dr. dr. Osman Sianipar, DMM, M.Sc., Sp.PK(K)
  • Laboratory Aspects of TB Infections (Sputum Culture, GeneXpert, IGRA) – dr. Riat El Khair, Sp.PK(K), MSc.
  • Screening and Diagnosis of Opportunistic Infection – dr. Andaru Dahesihdewi, M.Kes, Sp.PK(K)
  • Laboratory Diagnosis and Monitoring of HIV- Dr. dr. Umi Solekhah Intansari, M.Kes., Sp.PK(K)
  • RNA Viral Load for HIV Monitoring – Prof. dr. Budi Mulyono,  Sp.PK.(K).,MM

Practical sessions:

  • Complete Blood Count
  • Flowcytometry: CD4 counts and viral load counts 

Tutorial:

  • Case discussion with supervisor related to TB-HIV infections laboratory pitfall.
Measurable learning outcome:

  • The ability to explain the laboratory examination for TB and HIV diagnosis and monitoring.
  • The ability to demonstrate laboratory investigation of HIV infections.
