“This picture was taken during the International meeting on clinical epidemiology where the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU), Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada was appointed as chair of the Indonesian Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence Based Medicine (ICE EBM) network for the period of 2015-2017.”
Profile
CEBU was established in year 1986 under the leadership of late Prof. dr. Tony Sadjimin SpA(K), MSc, MPH, PhD. The center contributes to improve the quality of health care, medical education and research, and public health policy in developing countries. The commitment of Dr Sardjito Teaching hospital toward this center was shown as this center became a joint center between the Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Sardjito teaching hospital. Both institutions have been providing support for CEBU to conduct its educational, training and research activities.
In 1980, CEBU became a member of the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) and at that time was the only Indonesian member of INCLEN. Its reputation in education and training was confirmed in 1992 when CEBU was appointed to be the only Clinical Epidemiology Research and Training Center (CERTC) in Indonesia for South-east Asian region. In the same year, CEBU started its master degree in clinical epidemiology participated by students from Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, China, Vietnam and Iraq. For practicing clinicians, clinical epidemiology and EBM goes beyond knowledge. Application in daily practices should be enhanced in using the best available evidence for making decisions. Therefore, clinical epidemiology and EBM are also integrated in the curriculum since the early years of medical education. As for research, the landmark study was Vitamin A deficiency in children (MORVITA). Since then, many research activities have been carried out prioritizing in improving quality of care in the hospitals. Further activities in research and training has led to CEBU as a trainer on Cochrane Systematic review and then appointment as the Indonesian Cochrane Node. Other training activities delivered Chair’s Message are EBM, Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline, Patient safety and Clinical Risk Management, Data analysis for improving healthcare services, and Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. Guided by the Board of Fellow, the organization of CEBU will be continuously strengthened in the future to support the development of disease registry and clinical trial unit at Dr Sardjito Teaching hospital.
CEBU has a great commitment and concern in good quality of health care with a multidisciplinary approach for solving priority health problems both at the hospital and community settings.The main activities of CEBU are:
- facilitate teaching and learning in clinical epidemiology
(master science program in clinical epidemiology
and in the undergraduate program) - research activities in hospital and community setting
- consultations in applied clinical and health research
