Cancer Treatment through Precision Medicine

 

FK-KMK UGM. Cancer became one of the topics raised in Summer Course 2023, specifically in Panel 4 which was held on Wednesday (8/11) at the Auditorium of the Faculty. This topic became the focus of discussion because precision medicine can be one of the solutions for maximum cancer treatment.

Oxford Nanopore Technologies is a CNS tumor precision diagnosis tool originating from America. Nanopore has revolutionized DNA and RNA sequencing, allowing more laboratories to perform genome sequencing. The presentation was delivered by Thidathip Wongsurawat from Mahidol University, Thailand through a presentation entitled “Precision Diagnosis of CNS Tumors Using Nanopore Sequencing Technology”.

Also present was Dr. Tsung-Hsien Chuang from the National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan explaining how therapy for cancer patients. Through precision medicine, the treatment of cancer patients can be maximized because each patient will receive treatment based on the genetic condition of his body.

One of the cancers discussed in Panel 4 was oral cancer. The oral cancer material was delivered by Prof. drg. Supriatno, M.Kes., M.D.Sc., Ph.D. from Universitas Gadjah Mada with a presentation entitled “Development of Oral Cancer Research at Universitas Gadjah Mada”. In his presentation, drg. Supriatno explained that UGM is currently developing immune-boosting supplements for oral cancer patients derived from local ingredients.

Lastly, Prof. Wen-Yu Hu from National Taiwan University Hospital, Taiwan presented a presentation entitled “Palliative Care in Developed and Developing Countries”. Palliative care is the treatment of patients with incurable diseases and their families by maximizing the patient’s quality of life and reducing disturbing symptoms, through pain reduction and paying attention to the psychological and spiritual aspects of patients and families.

The goal of palliative care is good death. Good death is a condition free from distress and suffering that can be avoided by patients, families, and nurses, and is generally by the wishes of patients and families, consistent with clinical, cultural, and ethical standards.

Summer Course 2023 was held for 2 weeks from November 6, 2023 to November 17, 2023. The activity, which involves students from both within the country and abroad, aims to improve interprofessional in healthcare management and technology with its accompanying problems with an interdisciplinary and multi-university approach.
