Avoiding Misconceptions Becomes a Homework for Researchers

FK-KMK UGM. Research has become a daily fare for academics in general. In Indonesia, this is inseparable from the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi principles as a form of knowledge development and innovation based on research.

On Wednesday (8/7), the Doctoral Program in Medical and Health Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FK-KMK UGM), collaborated with Editage to hold an online workshop titled ‘Common challenges in writing journal publication in English’.

“Thank you to Editage, hopefully this event can reduce the challenges for Indonesian researchers,” welcomed the Head of the Doctoral Program of FK-KMK UGM, Prof. dr. Adi Utarini, M.Sc, MPH, Ph.D.

Prof. Utarini considers that the approach to language competence – especially, English – is a key element in improving research quality. He also thanked Editage for encouraging improvements in research quality and international journal publication – particularly, for doctoral students at FK-KMK UGM.

Furthermore, the event was attended by more than 30 participants not limited to the UGM academic community, but spread from Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, to Jayapura.

During the workshop session, Dr. Raffaella Gozzelino from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal, presented tips and tricks for writing research manuscripts, known as the ABCs of Science Writing Method.

“The ABCs to be considered are A for Accuracy, B for Brevity, and C for Clarity, so that your research can be of higher quality,” explained Raffaella.

Moreover, Raffaella also explained several strategic methods in research, from the basic structure of manuscript writing to misconceptions in scientific writing.

“Generally, junior researchers tend to use fancy writing to appear cooler, whereas it’s a misconception,” she added.

“It’s better to make the research simple but specific, positioning it as if there’s a reader,” Raffaella advised.

Therefore, the synergy of strengthening researchers’ competencies and research quality becomes a form of commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Quality Education (SDG 4), and Healthy and Prosperous Life (SDG 3). (Isroq Adi Subakti/Reporter)
