FK-KMK UGM Organize International Postgraduate Symposium 2023

FK-KMK UGM. The Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing UGM is organizing the IPGS (International Postgraduate Symposium) 2023 and inviting international speakers from 5 countries. The agenda titled “Translating Medical Research and Innovation into Improved Patient Care” was held on Friday (18/8) at the Auditorium of FK-KMK UGM.

Prof. dr. Ali Gufron Mukti, M.Si., Ph.D (President Director of BPJS) and Prof. Maurice van Steensel (Nanyang Technological University) became the keynote speaker on the symposium agenda.

Prof. Ali Gufron delivered material on “National Precision Medicines Financing Policy”. He explained that there are long-term goals and short-term goals in development policies related to precision medicine in Indonesia.

“Short-term goals include the use of therapy combination, knowledge to overcome drug resistance, as well as innovative clinical trials or drugs aimed at pediatric and adult cancer. Meanwhile, long-term goals include advanced pharmacogenomics, identifying new targets for prevention, and determining the scientific basis for precision medicine for various diseases,” Prof. Ali Gufron explained.

The availability of medicines is the biggest challenge for JKN (National Health Insurance) at the moment. “BPJS Health must have an increased role in terms of drug availability to improve service to patients,” he added.

In the second keynote speaking, Prof. Maurice presented material “Experience of Bench-to-bedside” The Utility of Use-inspired Basic Science”. Prof. Maurice gave an explanation about acne, one of the 10 most common disorders in humans.

The explosive growth of the sebaceous glands at puberty causes sporadic acne. Sporadic acne is acne that occurs irregularly in certain places.

“The oily compound produced by the sebaceous glands is called sebum. The presence of sebum is very important to lubricate the skin and help it to be resistant to water,” explained Prof. Maurice. The growth of sebaceous glands must be cleaned periodically so that the pores do not clog and cause acne.
