The Leadership of Doctors and the Military in the Style of Roikhan

FK-KMK UGM. The Master’s Program in Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FK-KMK UGM), held an *Alumni Sharing* session on Thursday (19/12) with the theme “Becoming an Outstanding Leader in the Era of Society 5.0.” The event featured Marsma TNI dr. M. Roikhan Harowi, Sp.THT-KL, M.Kes., the Director of RSPAU Dr. Suhardi Hardjolukito, as the keynote speaker.

During his presentation, dr. Roikhan shared his inspiring career journey, starting as a physician in 1988 before choosing a military career in 1993. “At the time, my options were to work in remote 3T areas or serve the nation as a soldier. I chose to become a soldier,” he recalled.

dr. Roikhan discussed the unique challenges of leadership in the military, particularly when combined with the responsibilities of a doctor. “Being a doctor and a soldier requires balancing loyalty to superiors with the responsibilities of providing healthcare. In a hospital, the biggest challenge is managing other doctors, who possess their own authority and expertise,” he explained.

He highlighted the significant shifts in the healthcare landscape driven by Society 5.0. This era emphasizes more personalized healthcare that actively involves patients.

“The paradigm has shifted from doctor-oriented to patient-oriented care. Additionally, healthcare services are now more integrated, team-based, with flatter structures and a collaborative approach,” he stated.

dr. Roikhan also addressed the challenges posed by modern healthcare technologies, including the adoption of medical robotics and prepaid healthcare systems.

“The role of doctors is also evolving. They must not only have clinical skills but also be critical thinkers, adaptable, communicative, and collaborative,” he emphasized.

This inspiring session showcased FK-KMK UGM alumni’s commitment to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
