FK-KMK UGM Partners with WHO and Shanghai Jiao Tong to Advance Biobank Innovation

The Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FK-KMK UGM) hosted an international delegation on Tuesday (26/10) to discuss the development of its Biobank as a leading research center. The meeting was attended by FK-KMK UGM Dean Prof. Dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, M.Sc., Ph.D., FRSPH, Vice Dean for Research and Development Dr. Lina Choridah, Sp.Rad.(K), and Head of the Biobank, Dr. Jajah Fachiroh, S.P., M.Si., Ph.D.

Representatives included Dr. Zisis Kozlakidis, Ph.D., Head of Laboratory Support, Biobanking and Services at WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, and Dr. Cheong Io Hong, Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, China.

During the discussion, Dr. Cheong emphasized the critical need for cross-border collaboration in managing biological data and samples, especially in the post-pandemic era. “Countries are resuming cooperative efforts to share data and samples, which is vital to ensuring global standards for molecular biology,” stated Dr. Cheong.

Dr. Zisis highlighted the importance of biomedical data management as a priority for WHO, saying, “Our goal is to create case studies showcasing international collaboration in biobanking that deliver tangible benefits to the global community. Neutral data management platforms can accelerate solutions for pressing health issues.”

Prof. Yodi affirmed UGM’s commitment to strengthening the Biobank’s role as a top-tier research center. “UGM’s Biobank development is a significant investment in advancing global health research. Through collaborations like this, we aim to deliver meaningful benefits for both UGM’s research and broader public health,” he noted.

The meeting also explored potential collaborations, including student exchange programs and the establishment of international standards for biobank research. A key focus was on enhancing efficiency and transparency in managing samples and data to support global research initiatives.

This engagement is expected to mark the beginning of stronger collaborations between FK-KMK UGM and international institutions, particularly in advancing Biobank development and management. Through these efforts, FK-KMK UGM aims to solidify its position as a leading research hub in Southeast Asia.

The meeting aligns with FK-KMK UGM’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
