FK-KMK UGM. On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 9:30 AM WIB, the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK) at UGM held a symposium titled “Dignified Clinical Education” via Zoom. The event was opened with remarks and guidance from the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Ahmad Hamim Sadewa, Ph.D., and the Director of Human Resources, Education, and Research at Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Drg. Nusati Ikawahju, M.Kes.
The symposium featured three key sessions. Dr. Yoyo Suhoyo, M.Med.Ed., Ph.D., Chair of the MHPEU and Assistant Vice Dean, presented on “Prevention and Management of Bullying and Mental Health Issues in Specialist and Subspecialist Medical Education.” Dr. Yudha Mathan Sakti, Sp.OT(K), delivered a session on “Best Practices in the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Study Program,” and Dr. Supanji, Sp.M(K), M.Kes., Ph.D., presented on “Best Practices in the Ophthalmology Study Program.”
Dignified Clinical Education is an approach that not only focuses on developing the technical competencies of learners but also emphasizes building strong character and humanistic values. This concept involves all parties in clinical education, from students, lecturers, educators, educational staff, and administrators, to doctors and other healthcare professionals.
In his session, Dr. Yoyo explained that through Dignified Clinical Education, each individual involved is expected to develop good character, ultimately creating a better culture and way of life within the clinical education environment and society at large. He emphasized that education that prioritizes cognitive aspects without considering the humanistic dimension can result in healthcare professionals who are less sensitive to the emotional and psychosocial needs of patients.
The principles of ideal clinical education should be implemented, especially considering the current viral issues related to bullying and mental health problems in specialist medical education. Most news stories highlight the negative aspects and the challenges of pursuing specialist medical education. This event is expected to counter the negative issues circulating today and showcase the positive aspects of specialist medical education. Through this activity, awareness of the importance of humanistic aspects in clinical education is expected to increase and serve as the foundation for producing healthcare professionals who are not only clinically competent but also possess high moral integrity.
The symposium also emphasized the contribution of Dignified Clinical Education to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3, “Good Health and Well-being.” By placing humanity at the core of the educational process, this concept supports the improvement of healthcare quality by creating healthcare professionals who are not only technically skilled but also empathetic and ethical. Dignified Clinical Education is also aligned with Goal 4, “Quality Education,” as it focuses on building character and creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all involved.
