The Role of Infection Control and Environment Hygiene in Prevention of Antibiotic Resistance

FM-UGM. According to Department of Health Indonesian Republic, mortality due to antimicrobial resistance through 2014 amounted to 700,000 per year. In 2015, Department of Health Indonesian Republic explained that in 2050 estimated the mortality due to antibiotic resistance will reach out ten million person per year, bigger than deaths caused by cancer that only 8.2 million people per year. Those things caused the impact of the global loss of USD 100 trillion.

The preventing and handling about antibiotic resistance becomes a responsibility for all people around the world. Even though the nurse did not have the privilege to make a prescription but they can do another thing to control the antibiotic resistance.

Khudazi Aulani, S.Kp. M.Kes, lecture of Health Science Program Faculty of Medicine UGM explained that in Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) event which organized by health work group in Auditorium Gedung Ismangoen Faculty of Medicine UGM (15/3).There are two things that could be done by the nurse to tackle the antibiotic resistance. At first, to control the infection of the patient and second to keep the environment hygiene. Besides, Elsi Dwi Hapsari, S.Kep. M.S. D.S. added that antimicrobial resistance needs an important attention when the transition infection, it should not spread.

Furthermore, the challenge that should tackle by the nurse is the clinical patient condition who already resistance to an antibiotic, the invasive installation, action high risk, doctors often change, the availability of pharmaceuticals and placing patients adequately.

“The nurse should attention about the hand hygiene before and after taking care the patients, do not let the bacteria that is spread to other places. Moreover, if the bacteria spread to the nurse’s family,” said PPI team of RSUP. Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta, Sri Purwaningsih, S.Kep. Ns.
