A Short Note Professor of Jamkesda Initiator : sincere intentions behind Indonesia Health Insurance

Starting from the Campus Health Clinic

Prof. Ghufron was born in Blitar on May 17, 1962. Since childhood he had a dream to be a doctor because he wants to help many people in the health field. After graduated from Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) 1988, he continues his study to Department of Tropical Hygiene Mahidol University 1991, and continue to get his Ph.D at the University of Newcastle.

Prof. Ghufron continue to make a concept of holistic health insurance. The formation of Campus Health Clinic, known as Gadjah Mada Medical Center (GMC) is one of implementation of the ideas from Prof. Ghufron. The aim of the GMC is to ensure the health of civitas academic UGM with preventive and curative services. The funding insurance of GMC from students who are already integrated with tuition fee (UKT). Because of his idea, Prof. Ghufron was chosen as a Director of GMC, 1999. Because of his interest in the health insurance system, Prof. Ghufron initiate Regional Health Insurance, or well known as Jamkesda. The formation of Jamkesda is implemented the principle of “gotong royong”.

Prof. Ghufron said national health insurance realize to constitution mandate which is a responsibility of local and central government. ”There needs cooperation between local and central government. Local government as a decentralization health spirit and central government has responsibility to integrate.”, said the former Director, South-East Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN). National health insurance must managed by professionals.

Sincere intentions from Prof. Ghufron brings success that makes the former Indonesians Minister of Health was awarded the title Doctor Honoris Causa in the health field from Coventry University.

Not only in community, Prof. Ghufron also give big contribute to world education. Proven with his appointment as the youngest Dean of Faculty of Medicine in 2008 and became Director General in the Ministry of Research, Technology & Higher Education until now.

“As a professional, you must have enough knowledge and adequate skills, also ethics. We also have to focus on the goals, work hard, be smart, completely, and whole-hearted.”
